Nigel Shaw has made a lifelong study of the singing voice and believes in singing with freedom and without constriction.
He studied singing in Leeds with Gerald Wragg, gaining an A.R.C.M diploma and winning the Robert Tebb memorial prize for outstanding performance.
As a student he sang with Opera North but later joined the Scottish Opera where he performed and covered many roles.
Nigel continued with the opera companies for ten years, working throughout Britain and Europe and appearing alongside such artists as Dame Janet Baker, Sir Thomas Allen, Dennis O’Neil and Benjamin Luxon.
During this time, cabaret work with his wife Janeen was becoming a major part of his musical life. This led to lengthy engagements abroad in Gibraltar, Bahrain, Israel and Cyprus as well as throughout the UK, regularly supporting such artists as Frankie Howard, Ray Allen, Moira Anderson, The Beverly Sisters and Ross Conway.
Nigel settled in the North in 1989 and since then has continued as a regular cabaret and concert artist.
He has a busy private teaching practice, as well as being singing teacher for many years at Bangor University, after which he has worked for Ysgolion William Mathias, Rydal and Eirias Highschool.
Pupils have gone on to careers in Opera and the West End stage, as well as wins at the National Eisteddfod, choral scholarships, and National Youth Chiors of Wales and Great Britain.
Recently his pupils had thirteen distinctions in one day in the A.B.R.S.M examination, and nine first places at the Hazel Grove Music Festival.
For several years he was musical director and co-producer of the sell out Pearl Shaw Shows at Venue Cymru, and is now busy conducting his choir “Amici del Canto”. Engagements with them have included, St Peters Rome, Niccolai Kirche Frankfurt, St Angelo in Vado Cathedral, various music festivals, and this year the Mercatello Festival in Italy.
Nigel has sung the roles of Ford (Falstaff) Figaro and the Count (Marriage of Figaro) Ottone (L’incoronatione di Poppea), Aslan (Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe), Alidoro (La Lanerentola), Black Bob (Little Sweep), and Reb Nachum (Fiddler on the Roof). He has performed in many of the major theatres throughout Britain, including seasons in the West End (Sadler’s Wells and the Dominion). He sang in a Royal Command performance of Fiddler on the Roof in front of H.M. The Queen and Prince Phillip and also appeared in a BBC TV and Radio broadcast of The Golden Cockerel by Rimsky-Korsakov.
Nigel has sung most of the standard Oratorio repertorie, and has appeared as soloist many times with choirs and choral societies in North Wales.
Forthcoming engagements include Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Stainer’s Crucifixion, The Messiah, and a complete performance of Schumann’s Dichterliebe with his wife Janeen, which will be his fifth recital for Rhyl Music Club.
